Deaf Services
The experience of deafness is one often characterized by isolation due to communication barriers. Few people in our society can communicate effectively with deaf individuals. As a result, people who are deaf often seek out the company of others, who are deaf, where they share a common language and experience. This phenomena has been labeled as “deaf culture,” and it is an important element to consider in the provision of human services.

group learning sign language Goodwill is Maine's largest and most experienced provider of Deaf Services. For deaf individuals with mental illness, Goodwill offers intensive case management, community support services, and residential support. The services are provided in participants' apartments.

Goodwill also provides day and residential services for people who are deaf and have mental retardation. These services are also based in the Portland area. The goal of these Deaf Services programs is to help each individual maximize their independent living skills, enhance their quality of life, and community participation.

All of Goodwill's Deaf Services are provided by staff members (many of whom are deaf) who are fluent in American Sign Language. Goodwill employs and contracts with certified interpreters. Our facilities are equipped with adaptive equipment, which enhances communication.
