Developmental Disabilities Day Treatment Services

Program Overview

Goodwill offers two community-based day programs for people with developmental disabilities: the SELF Program in Augusta and the Community Skills Program in Portland.

Each day individuals actively participate in educational and recreational experiences interwoven within the community. The goal of the program is to help participants enhance their living skills and involvement in their community. At the same time they benefit from peer activities and recreational events. In some instances, classes such as cooking, reading, and creative writing might be offered at Goodwill. Most classes, however, are offered off-site. Participants learn budgeting skills at the bank, shopping skills at the grocery store and transportation skills on the public buses. Many sign up for classes and events at local YMCA's, libraries, art museums, health clubs, theatres and dance companies. Others choose to volunteer at local food pantries, churches and animal shelters. Each activity is selected by the individual based upon their unique needs and interests. Staff members provide one on one and small group support to help participants complete their activities.

Day services for individuals with Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities are funded by the Department of Behavioral and Developmental Services. Referrals are generally made by the DBDS Case workers to the Program Manager at the following locations:
