Brain Injury Day Treatment Services

Program Overview

community based day program People who experience brain injuries or neurological disorders often have prolonged periods of recovery and extensive rehabilitation needs. Where the hospital leaves off, Goodwill's NeuroRehabilitation Services, BaySide and WestSide begin.

Many people who have experienced a brain injury or have a neurological disorder face challenges in their daily activities in some of the following areas:

  • memory loss
  • organizational skills
  • physical limitations
  • speech and language impairments
  • personality changes
  • emotional changes
  • problems with planning and follow through
  • thinking problems
  • headaches
  • dizziness

Goodwill's NeuroRehabilitation Services include BaySide in Portland and WestSide in Lewiston. These programs are Maine's most comprehensive and therapeutic day treatment programs. Survivors of brain injury and individuals with neurological impairments get the chance to develop physical mobility, interpersonal skills, self-care, work skills, communication, and other skills required for daily living. Because these skills are learned best in the natural environment, we provide treatment and training not only at the program, but also in the individual's home and community.

Admission Criteria

We offer a highly specialized program for people who:

  • Have a neurological injury or impairment
  • Are between 5-70 years old
  • Are medically stable
  • Can demonstrate a way to pay for services
  • Have a desire and prognosis to benefit from rehabilitation services

Superior Staffing

At Goodwill's BaySide and WestSide NeuroRehabilitation Services, a highly specialized treatment team provides the intensive rehabilitation people need to rebuild their lives. The Treatment Team meets regularly with participants to create their own treatment plan and monitor their progress. Treatment plans vary according to individual needs, severity of the injury or disorder, and their personal goals. A Neuropsychologist oversees the delivery of the rehabilitation services in a person's plan.

BaySide and WestSide staff members receive a comprehensive orientation and regular clinical supervision. Each staff averages 37 hours of ongoing training to maintain and expand their skills. The staff averages 8 years of experience working with individuals who have neurological deficits.

Depending on an individual's needs, the team of experts working with them could include a:

  • Neuropsychologist
  • Physical Therapist
  • Physiatrist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Substance Abuse Counselor
  • Registered Nurse
  • Social Worker
  • Therapeutic Recreation Specialist
